The rupee strengthened for the eighth consecutive session on Wednesday (October 21, 2026), buoyed by foreign fund inflows linked to the Jio Platforms IPO. However, a sharp rise in crude oil prices capped its gains amid concerns over imported inflation.

The rupee closed at 94.46 against the U.S. dollar, its strongest level in over a month, after touching an intraday high of 94.43. It pared some gains as benchmark Brent crude prices climbed to $110 a barrel.

The $3.2-billion Jio Platforms IPO, India’s largest initial public offering, opened for subscription on Wednesday (October 21) and was fully subscribed as foreign investors rushed to participate in the issue.

“Going forward, movements in the dollar index, crude oil prices and foreign portfolio flows will remain key drivers, with geopolitical uncertainty continuing to pose risks to the currency,” Anil Kumar Bhansali, head of treasury at Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP, said in a note.

10-year G-Sec yield hits highest level since 2023

In contrast to the rupee’s gains, the benchmark 10-year government securities (G-Sec) yield rose to 7.44% on Wednesday (October 21, 2026), its highest level since 2023, as surging crude prices intensified inflationary concerns. Bond prices and yields move inversely.

Uncertainty over a resolution to the ongoing West Asia crisis, coupled with concerns over imported inflation, continued to weigh on the bond market. India’s retail inflation rose to a higher-than-expected 5.54% in September, bringing it closer to the Reserve Bank of India’s upper tolerance limit of 6%.

Venkatkrishnan Srinivasan, founder and managing partner of Rockfort Fincap LLP, expects the benchmark 10-year yield to trade in the 7.25%-7.50% range.

“On a durable basis, if the crude remains above $100 for the next 25 days, yields could even rise as high as 7.60%,” he said.
