Justice Vikram Nath will be the next CJI

Before becoming an Additional Judge of the Allahabad High Court in 2004, Justice Vikram Nath practiced there for more than 17 years. In 2006 he became a permanent judge. He later served as the Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court before being promoted to the Supreme Court in August 2021. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on 15 April 2022, he shared the experiences of his student life at Shia College. At that time he said that college made an unprecedented contribution to my success. Had it not been for Shia College, I would have been nothing.

Retirement only in 2027, know when he will take over the post of CJI

on 31st August 2021 Justice Vikram Nath Reached the Supreme Court, when he was appointed a judge. He is retiring in 2027. Even before this, Justice Nath will take over the responsibility of Chief Justice of India. The tenure of current CJI Surya Kant is considered to be till 9 February 2027. After this, Justice Vikram Nath will take over the responsibility of the next Chief Justice.

He has handled these big responsibilities in the Supreme Court

Since becoming a Justice of the Supreme Court, apart from judicial work, Justice Nath has held important administrative responsibilities in the administration of justice and legal-services framework. He has served as Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee. He has also been the Chairman of the e-Committee of the Supreme Court of India, where he has overseen the use of information and communication technology in the Indian judiciary from May 2025. On 24 November 2025, Justice Nath took over as the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). He is also the Chairman of the Mediation and Conciliation Project Committee, which works to develop and strengthen mediation as a method of dispute resolution.

Special connection with Lucknow University

After the news of Justice Vikram Nath getting the responsibility of the next CJI, the 100 year old Law Department of Lucknow University has come into the news. The university had given Justice Nath the ‘Distinguished Alumni Award’ in 2018. Justice Vikram Nath graduated in law from Shia PG College, Lucknow University in 1986, then enrolled as a lawyer.

Early life and education

Justice Vikram Nath was born on 24 September 1962 in Kaushambi, Uttar Pradesh, India. He comes from a family of lawyers and is the fourth generation of his family to enter the field of law. He graduated in Science stream in 1983. Received law degree from Lucknow University in 1986. Subsequently, on March 30, 1987, Justice Vikram Nath got himself registered with the Uttar Pradesh Bar Council and practiced as a lawyer in the Allahabad High Court for more than 17 years.

A look at judicial career

• On 24 September 2004, Justice Vikram Nath was appointed as an additional judge of the Allahabad High Court and on 27 February 2006, he took oath as a permanent judge.
• After serving for 15 years, he was appointed the 26th Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court on 10 September 2019.
• The special thing is that during his tenure in Gujarat High Court, he started live-streaming of court proceedings.
• He became the first Chief Justice of the High Court of India to do so. This was an important step towards the use of technology to increase transparency and public access to judicial proceedings.
