O’Hare Airport reports hundreds of flight cancellations as heavy rain arrives – NBC Chicago

Weather significantly disrupted air travel in Chicago early Saturday, with heavy rain leading to more than 300 flight cancellations at O’Hare International Airport and several additional rounds of showers in the forecast.

As of 2:32 p.m., 347 flights had been canceled at the airport, with delays averaging 68 minutes, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation’s website. Midway Airport reported 71 flight cancellations and average delays of less than 15 minutes.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, O’Hare was also under a ground delay, a traffic management measure that holds departing flights on the ground to manage congestion at the arriving airport. The ground delay was set to remain in effect through 10:59 p.m.

The travel disruptions came as forecasters warned of up to 3 inches of rain throughout the weekend, along with the possibility of thunderstorms and localized flooding.
