Police conducted a flag march on Wednesday night after the clash in the North Campus of Delhi University.
The Delhi High Court on Thursday expressed displeasure over the violence taking place during the student union elections of Delhi University. The court said- Democracy cannot be made a society of criminals.
The court has sought a report in this matter from the DU administration, Delhi Police and the government by tomorrow.
The court has also warned that if it is not satisfied with the steps taken, then the counting of votes and declaration of results will be stopped.
The court made this comment during the hearing of the PIL related to violence and hooliganism during the DUSU election campaign.
There was a clash between two groups of students in North Campus on Wednesday night ahead of Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections. ABVP and NSUI accused people associated with each other of attacking at different places.
Campaigning for DUSU elections has ended on 16th September. Voting will take place on September 18 and counting of votes will take place on September 19.
ABVP alleged that NSUI workers beat up their worker.
Before the violence, unidentified people in the crowd were seen carrying sticks in their hands.
ABVP claims – fatal attack on member, assault on workers
ABVP alleged that one of its members was fatally attacked outside Law Center-1 (LC-1). The organization claims that people associated with Congress, Indian Youth Congress (IYC) and NSUI were involved in the attack.
ABVP also alleged that the house of its members in Hari Mandir, Delhi University was attacked by NSUI workers. According to the organization, at that time ABVP members were holding a peaceful meeting and women student members were also present there. ABVP claimed that one attacker was caught and handed over to the police.
According to ABVP, non-student political activists affiliated with the Congress campaigned for the NSUI panel. The organization raised questions about the presence of outside political activists and propaganda in classrooms. Also accused of using money to influence students and demanded a fair investigation.
NSUI claims- Tribal student attacked
Meanwhile, NSUI alleged that its tribal student member was attacked by people associated with ABVP outside Motilal Nehru College.
The organization demanded investigation and action into the incident. NSUI national media in-charge Ravi Hanuman Pandey accused ABVP of indulging in politics of intimidation and isolation.
Teacher assaulted in Motilal Nehru College
A DUSU campaigner was accused of assaulting a teacher at Motilal Nehru College (Evening). After this the college faculty demonstrated.
According to a teacher, a faculty member suffered serious injuries and was taken for treatment. The teachers demanded action and talked about registering an FIR and boycotting election-related duties.
Teachers said that students should understand their limits and should not assault the faculty under any circumstances. However, the teachers could not clarify which student organization the preacher who assaulted was associated with.
Delhi HC ready for urgent hearing on violation of election rules
Here, the Delhi High Court on September 17 agreed to immediately hear the petition related to violation of Lyngdoh Committee recommendations, anti-defeasance guidelines and court instructions during the DUSU election campaign.
In the petition filed by lawyer Prashant Manchanda, allegations have been made about more than the prescribed number of people campaigning with the candidates, presence of outsiders, convoys of vehicles, rallies, road shows, disrupting traffic and use of printed posters and pamphlets. There is also mention of vandalism in public places and violation of rules related to money and muscle power.
The petition demands action against the candidates who break the rules, disqualification if necessary and action against the alleged negligence of the officials. The petitioner said that in view of the repeated violations, immediate preventive steps are necessary.
Delhi University has 2 campuses, 91 colleges in them, elections in 52
Delhi University has two campuses. The South and North campuses are located at a distance of approximately 15 km. Including both the campuses, DU has 91 colleges, but not all colleges of DU can vote in DUSU elections.
Only 52 colleges and faculties in DUSU directly participate in voting. Some big colleges like St. Stephen’s, Lady Shri Ram and Jesus & Mary are also not part of DUSU.
